The Allegro CX is the latest addition to the Allegro family of rugged, handheld "field PCs" from Juniper Systems. It runs Windows CE 4.2 on a 400 MHz Intel XScale processor and features a 62-button full alpha-numeric keypad, which is intended to be usable with gloved hands.

The device is said to be ergonomically designed for one-handed operation, either right or left, and features balanced weight distribution. Rings at all four corners of the case allow for multiple hand- or shoulder-strap orientations. (Click image at right for a larger view.)

According to Juniper Systems, the Allegro CX targets natural resource and agriculture field data collection applications, such as fisheries, forestry, geophysics, land survey and geomatics, livestock production, offshore oil and gas exploration, pipeline monitoring, rangeland monitoring and inventory, stevedoring, and wildlife resources. The device is also expected to be useful in various other rugged applications including automotive testing, scientific data logging, distribution and warehousing, facilities and asset management, meter reading, and military uses.

Features and specifications of the Allegro CX include:

Processor -- 400 MHz Intel XScale
Memory -- 64MB or 128MB SDRAM; 128MB-1GB solid state storage
Display -- 320 x 240 pixels (QVGA) landscape orientation with touchscreen and adjustable brightness LED backlight. Choice of color or monochrome display:
- Color -- TFT active matrix transflective LCD allows operation in cold temperatures without a heater. 3.8 inch diagonal. Includes MX1178 graphic accelerator.
- Monochrome -- Black on white high contrast, 4.1 inch diagonal. Automatic temperature compensated contrast adjustment. Display heater for cold temperature operation.
Wireless -- Integrated Class 2 Bluetooth (standard with color display option)
I/O ports:
- USB port in base for use with USB/Power Dock. USB MultiSync feature provides synchronization between one host PC and multiple Allegro CX units.
- Two serial ports on sealed 9-pin D connectors with EMI filtering and full modem control. COM1 supplies up to 200 ma of 5 volts on the DTR pin.
- Infrared Port
Internal expansion port -- Includes low 3 address bits, low 8 data bits, bus control signals, COM3, and GPIO. COM3 ring signal causes unit to resume from a suspend state.
Expansion slot -- User-accesible 16-bit PC card slot accepts Type I or II 3V/5V PC cards
Operating System -- Windows CE 4.2
Environmental:
- Operating temp. -- -30 to +54 deg C
- Passes MIL-STD 810F and IP67 leak (immersion) tests
- Passes MIL-STD 810F shock (drop) test
