As part of the "Silicon Valley Speaker Series" at Microsoft's Mountain View, Calif. campus, Scott Horn, director of marketing for the Microsoft Embedded Devices Group, gave a talk today which provided an introduction to Microsoft's Windows Embedded products and strategies. WindowsForDevices.com was there, and has published the slide presentation online.

Horn's talk provided an overview of Microsoft's perspective on current trends in embedded systems, as well as Microsoft's embedded market and product strategy and business model relating to the development of smart, connected devices in industries such as consumer electronics, commercial (especially retail POS), mobile, and networking.

The presentation also included live demos of products using Windows CE .NET and Windows XP Embedded, including an interesting demonstration of the VoIP capabilities of CE .NET 4.2 which made use of a Viewsonic Smart Display and the unique VoIP-based "walkie talkie" function implemented by a pair of Symbol Technologies handhelds. Other products on display included a fancy sewing machine made by Bernina and a mobile robot made by Fujitsu -- both powered by Windows CE based software.

The presentation was followed by a Q&A with the audience, and there was a free drawing for a Windows CE-based Microsoft Wireless Access Point kit.
