HTC's Advantage is a PDA/phone that touts a "laptop-style experience," with a 5-inch 640 x 480 display and a detachable QWERTY keyboard. Based on a reference design code-named Athena, it was first released in January 2007 running Windows Mobile 5.0.

That version, the Advantage 7500, has been offered by T-Mobile as the Ameo (shown at right) and as the U1000 by Dopod, an HTC subsidiary.

In March 2007, HTC rolled out the Advantage 7501, using the identical hardware but stepping up to Windows Mobile 6. The device runs a 624 MHz PXA270-series ("Bulverde") XScale processor, and is equipped with 128 MB of SDRAM, 256 MB of flash memory, and a built-in 8 GB hard drive.

The Advantage's 5-inch touchscreen display is driven by an ATI Imageon W2284 graphics controller that also supports TV out. An optional "4-in-1" cable connects to a proprietary 18-pin interface on the phone and provides the following ports:

USB 1.1 host
VGA output
S-Video output
Composite video output

The Advantage 7501 works on tri-band 3G/HSDPA and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE cellular networks. It additionally includes both WiFi and stereo Bluetooth.

Additional audio capabilities include dual speakers and a 3.5 mm audio jack. The unit also has a relatively ambitious 3-megapixel camera, with auto focus and a flash LED.

Finally, the Advantage also incorporates GPS via the Qualcomm MSM6275 chipset. It is typically sold with TomTom Navigator 6 software.

As of August 2007, the Advantage had not attracted major carrier support in the United States, but was being sold by HTC as an unlocked device for approximately $800.
