Device profile: Sierra Wireless Voq smartphones

Sierra Wireless has unveiled a new line of "professional" smartphones based on Microsoft Windows Mobile software for Smartphones. The Voq smartphones, which combine high-end mobile phone capabilities with PDA functionality, will feature a normal 12-key phone-type keypad along with a unique, flip-open QWERTY thumb-pad.

The first Voq phones, expected to become available in the first half of 2003, will be based on a 200 MHz Intel PXA262 processor and will support GSM and GPRS wireless networks, Sierra Wireless says.

Key features and specifications of the Voq smartphones include . . .
  • Operating system -- Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphone
  • Processor -- 200MHz Intel Xscale PXA262
  • Memory -- 32MB RAM (16MB available for user apps), plus 48MB Flash Memory (20MB available for user app/data storage)
  • Wireless voice and data networks -- tri-band world phone supporting global GSM voice networks, and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) data
  • Messaging options:
    • SMS –- short message service for text messaging
    • MMS -– multimedia message service for text, audio and picture messaging
    • IM –- instant messaging using Microsoft MSN Messenger
    • IMAP4 and POP -– access personal and work email accounts
  • Web browsing -- Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer; supports web and WAP pages written in HTML or WML, as well as ActiveX, J-script, and xHTML
  • Multimedia -- Windows Media Player plays digital music and video files downloaded to the device

"By going with the Windows Mobile platform and leveraging their proven experience in wireless data, Sierra Wireless and Voq are setting the standard for future phone/messaging handhelds."
