Device profile: Delphi FleetOutlook "TruckPC"
(Jan. 13, 2004)

Delphi Corp., the world's largest manufacturer of radios and transportation components, today announced the commercial availability of FleetOutlook, an in-dash onboard computer that implements a comprehensive fleet management and security solution combined with full radio functionality. The device contains an embedded Hitachi SH3 processor running Microsoft's Windows CE operating system.

Originally dubbed the Truck Productivity Computer (TruckPC), the system was developed by a consortium of top technology vendors led by a major trucking OEM, according to Delphi. FleetOutlook was subsequently redesigned to fit all OEM heavy truck radio configurations and offers a choice of either web-based access or integration with existing enterprise systems.

Delphi claims the FleetOutlook is the first onboard computer to combine real-time monitoring, wireless two-way messaging, and GPS tracking in a single in-dash am/fm radio unit. The FleetOutlook's hardware is built by Delphi and the software was created by MobileAria, a subsidiary of Delphi specializing in secured wireless systems and fleet management services.

What does it do?

FleetOutlook integrates premium audio, trip computer, GPS, and vehicle monitoring within a standard-sized, single-DIN radio package. Powered by Microsoft's Windows CE operating system, the device represents an open platform for fleet management applications that is easily updated with software upgrades, Delphi says.

The system is designed to be as user-friendly as a radio, and uses text-to-speech technology and radio speakers to deliver critical output displays and messages, helping drivers to keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. Messages from a dispatcher are "read" to the driver over the vehicle's radio speakers, automatically lowering the radio or CD volume with no driver intervention. Drivers can safely listen to incoming messages while keeping their hands on the wheel and their attention focused on driving tasks.

FleetOutlook's wireless security features include vehicle enabling and disabling capabilities. The system enables fleet managers to require assigned drivers to enter a personal ID number in order to engage the throttle of the vehicle. This prevents vehicle theft, but also assures that drivers take the correct vehicle. The vehicle can idle but cannot move until the proper identification is entered in FleetOutlook.

In addition to providing all standard onboard computer offerings such as 2-way communications, GPS tracking, and standard RS-232 and USB hardware interfaces, other FleetOutlook features include . . .
  • Tri-mode Wireless Communications -- Fleets can choose satellite, cellular and/or WLAN (802.11b) wireless data services. Customized to a fleet's specific needs, this highly intelligent message delivery system will prioritize and send messages based on cost and latency requirements.

  • Professional IT Tool Kit -- A web-base GUI interface, the tool kit is available for transportation companies with the necessary IT resources, system knowledge and interest in customization.

  • Microsoft Windows CE -- This operating system with 166MHz processor allows for a system memory capable of running multiple simultaneous applications

  • Remote over-the-air application configuration -- This allows software updates to the vehicle while keeping vehicles in service and on the road
FleetOutlook's software applications include:
  • Automated Driver Logs -- Eight days of DOT compliant logs are always available, even when a driver changes vehicles. Automatic notification is provided to fleet managers and drivers to accurately schedule deliveries based on hours available.

  • Fuel Tax Reporting -- By automatically gathering actual miles driven and fuel purchased in each state, reports are generated in ready-to-submit IFTA and Weight-Mile tax forms.

  • Vehicle Diagnostics -- With connectivity to the industry-standard J1708/J1939 vehicle data bus, critical diagnostics are gathered and evaluated by FleetOutlook.

  • Trip Information -- The system provides complete communications and reporting throughout the entire delivery and pick-up cycle, including automatic arrival and departure notification at any specified location.

  • Driver Authentication & Assignment -- Vehicle operation requires authorized driver PIN.
What's inside the box?

FleetOutlook's embedded hardware is based on a 166MHz Hitachi SH4 embedded processor, equipped with 32MB of RAM. The system boots Windows CE 3.0 from 16MB of built-in Flash memory, and a 64MB CompactFlash card provides nonvolatile storage for additional programs and data. Input/output ports include USB, serial, IrDA, CompactFlash, GPIO, a J1708 fieldbus.

"We chose Windows CE for its open architecture and its powerful capabilities to integrate with a variety of remote products," noted Karl Mehta, VP of sales and business development for MobileAria.

Availability

Pana-Pacific, a leading distributor of integrated applications and services for the trucking industry, will be responsible for the sales and marketing of FleetOutlook. The company will market off-the-shelf and custom applications directly to commercial trucking companies as well as businesses and government entities with vehicle fleets. Pana-Pacific will also market FleetOutlook to dealers, vehicle manufacturers, vehicle distributors, systems integrators, application developers and other companies serving the trucking industry.
