China's Ministry of Public Security apparently prefers Windows smartphones, at least judging by the fact that the agency contracted with TechFaith Wireless in 2009 to develop a Windows phone for the police forces in two Chinese provinces. Now QiGi -- which recently partnered with TechFaith to offer a smartphone that will come in both Windows and Google Android versions -- has come up with its own spin on a police phone, the new AK007.

Unless the AK007 holds secrets that aren't disclosed on the device's spec sheet, police-specific features of this Windows Mobile 6.1 phone are limited to a ruggedized case. The phone measures 4.44 x 2.67 x 0.62 inches (113 x 68 x 16 mm), weighs 3.88 ounces (110g), and has damage-resistant bumpers around its edges. Oh, and, as shown above, the phone is emblazoned with the word "Police" on the front, in case some thief might be tempted to make off with it.

The AK007 has a 2.8-inch touchscreen screen display with 320 x 240 resolution, a two megapixel camera, a trackball-style pointing device, and four dedicated calling buttons. The device has quad-band (850/900/1800/1900MHz) GSM telephony, and a 2500mAh battery that's said to be good for 200 minutes of talk time or 180 hours of standby.

The phone also includes WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS, the latter courtesy of an undisclosed chipset. According to QiGi, the AK007 includes a Marvell PXA310 applications processor clocked at 624MHz, an NXP 5209 baseband processor, 128MB of RAM, 256MB of flash, and a microSD expansion slot that accepts up to 8GB of storage.
