7-Eleven will soon employ Windows CE and the .NET Compact Framework in all 5,300 of its convenience stores throughout the US. The chain says it plans to migrate its current DOS-based batch-data processing to a new .NET-based application, running on Symbol Technologies MC3000 rugged mobile handhelds.

Symbol's recently announced MC3000 rugged handheld runs Windows CE 4.2 on an Intel PXA270 processor, and features a 320x320 resolution screen, 30 percent larger than typical PDAs' 320x240 (QVGA) screens, along with an integrated barcode scanner and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi wireless networking.

7-Eleven will use the devices for a variety of purposes, including merchandise inventory, price verification, and shipping and receiving applications. The wireless handheld will enable real-time visibility of product stock levels "to best meet customer demand and reduce costs," according to the company.

"Symbol has given us a long-term view in outlining how its mobility solutions can improve the mission-critical aspects of our store business," said Keith Morrow, vice president of information systems for 7-Eleven, in a statement issued by the company.

Symbol's announcement did not place a value on the deal but, sources are reporting that it involves some 12,000 units valued at $8.5 million.
