Symbol's recently announced
MC3000 rugged handheld runs Windows CE 4.2 on an Intel PXA270 processor, and features a 320x320 resolution screen, 30 percent larger than typical PDAs' 320x240 (QVGA) screens, along with an integrated barcode scanner and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi wireless networking.
7-Eleven will use the devices for a variety of purposes, including merchandise inventory, price verification, and shipping and receiving applications. The wireless handheld will enable real-time visibility of product stock levels "to best meet customer demand and reduce costs," according to the company.
"Symbol has given us a long-term view in outlining how its mobility solutions can improve the mission-critical aspects of our store business," said Keith Morrow, vice president of information systems for 7-Eleven, in a statement issued by the company.
Symbol's announcement did not place a value on the deal but,
sources are reporting that it involves some 12,000 units valued at $8.5 million.
