American Industrial Systems (AIS) announced a Windows CE-based panel PC intended for automation, building management, and HMI (human machine interface) applications. The 5.7-inch PM570M/R/CE5 runs Windows CE 6.0 on a 520MHz Marvell PXA270 CPU, has 128MB of RAM and 1GB of storage, offers a sealed front panel, and costs only around $400, the company says.

AIS bills its new PM570M/R/CE5 as a low-cost alternative to Intel-based devices for automation, control, and monitoring applications. Although the panel PC's hardware isn't exactly cutting-edge -- as noted, it runs Windows CE 5.0 on a 520MHz Marvell PXA270 CPU -- it's good enough to get the job done, while power consumption is said to be only eight Watts (with maximum screen brightness and CPU loading).

The well-connected PM570M/R/CE5 includes two gigabit Ethernet ports and standard 802.11b/g wireless networking, according to AIS. The system also has a RS232/422/485 serial port and two USB ports, the company says.

According to AIS, the PM570M/R/CE5 has 128GB of RAM and 1GB of flash storage, augmented by an SD card slot (maximum capacity not cited). Measuring 5.7 inches diagonally, the panel PC's resistive touchscreen features a 400-nit brightness rating, a 300:1 contrast ratio, and a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels, adds the company.

The PM570M/R/CE5, which has two speakers powered by three Watts of total amplification, is said to have a front panel that meets the IP64 standard for sealing against liquids and dust. The device operates in temperatures ranging from -4 to 140 deg. F (-20 to 60 deg. C), AIS adds.

Features and specifications listed by AIS for the PM570M/R/CE5 include:

        • Processor -- Marvell PXA270 clocked at 520MHz
        • Memory -- 128MB of RAM and 1GB of flash storage
        • Display -- 5.7-inch resistive touchscreen with 640 x 480 resolution
        • Expansion -- SD slot
        • Networking:
          • LAN -- 2 x 10/100/1000 Ethernet
          • WLAN -- 802.11b/g
        • Other I/O:
          • 2 x USB
          • 1 x RS232/422/485
        • Operating range -- -4 to 140 deg. F (-20 to 60 deg. C)
        • Dimensions -- 7.08 x 5.34 x 1.83 inches (180 x 135.8 x 46.7mm)
        Further information

According to AIS, VAR pricing for the PM570M/R/CE5 starts at approximately $400. More information on the panel PC may be found on the company's website, here.
