        Celeron-based controller has eight-bit digital I/O

Aaeon announced an Intel Celeron-based system controller that includes 8-bit digital I/O, four serial ports, and dual video outputs. The GES-3300F includes a 1.86GHz Celeron M440 CPU, a CompactFlash slot and 2.5-inch drive bay, plus six USB 2.0 ports, the company says.

Aaeon's GES-3300F is a fanless box PC at heart, but -- like the company's recent, Atom-powered FES-5120 -- achieves "system controller" status courtesy of its 8-bit digital I/O, accessible via front-panel connectors. Targeting applications such as transportation, the device offers both VGA and DVI-D connectors, though its video output is described as "single view."

The GES-3300F is said to use Intel's Celeron M 400, clocked at 1.86GHz. Introduced in 2006, this CPU has a 27-Watt TDP and is somewhat surprising to find in a new design, but Aaeon is nonetheless able to tout fanless operation and compliance with Energy Star standards for its device.

According to Aaeon, the GES-3300F further employs Intel's 945GME northbridge and ICH7M southbridge. Two DIMM slots accept up to 4GB of 400/533/667MHz DDR2 memory, while mass storage is provided by both a CompactFlash slot and a bay that's compatible with 2.5-inch, SATA hard disk drives, the company says.

Apart from the digital I/O connectors, the device's front panel includes two USB 2.0 ports, says Aaeon. The rear panel (above), meanwhile, includes two gigabit Ethernet ports, four serial ports (three RS232, one RS232/422/485), four more USB 2.0 ports, audio jacks (mic in, line out), and two PS/2 ports, in addition to the video outputs that have already been mentioned.

Aaeon says the GES-3300F includes a watchdog timer and hardware monitoring of temperature and voltage. Operating range is said to be from 32 to 113 deg. F (0 to 45 deg. C) when an industrial SSD is used for storage.

Features and specifications listed for the GES-3300F include:

        • Processor -- Intel Celeron M400 clocked at 1.86GHz
        • Chipset -- 945GME northbridge and ICH7M southbridge
        • Memory -- up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM via two SODIMM slots
        • Storage -- bay for 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive
        • Expansion -- CompactFlash slot
        • Networking -- two gigabit Ethernet ports
        • Other I/O:
          • 4 x serial (3 x RS232, 1 x RS232/422/485)
          • 8-bit digital I/O
          • 1 x VGA
          • 1 x DVI-D
          • 6 x USB 2.0 (2 front, 4 rear)
          • audio -- mic in and line out
          • 2 x PS/2
        • Power supply -- 12VDC
        • Operating range -- 32 to 113 deg. F (0 to 45 deg. C) with SSD
        • Dimensions -- 10.62 x 9.84 x 1.96 inches (270 x 250 x 50mm)
        • Weight -- 6.6 pounds (3kg)
        Further information

Operating system support was not cited, but the GES-3300F's familiar processor and chipset should allow it to run most, if not all, x86 operating systems. Aaeon did not cite pricing, but the device appears to be available now.
