        ISA SBC has PC/104 expansion

        Eric Brown | Date: Mar 19, 2010 | Comments: 1

Acrosser announced an ISA half-size embedded single board computer (SBC) based on DM&P's Vortex86DX system-on-chip (SoC) clocked at 800MHz. The fanless AR-B8170 board is equipped with 256MB of DDR2 RAM, supports 1600 x 1200 VGA displays, and offers an Ethernet port, four USB ports, two serial ports, and PC/104 expansion, says the company.

The AR-B8170 incorporates the Vortex86DX SoC (right), which was announced in November 2008. Supporting the complete 486SX instruction set, plus floating point support, the SoC is said to use under two Watts while running at up to 1GHz. Unlike DMP's earlier Vortex86SX, the DX version offers 256MB of embedded L2 cache, and supports up to 1GB of 333MHz DDR2 memory, according to DMP.

Acrosser clocks the AR-B8170's Vortex86DX to 800MHz and supplies it with 256MB DDR2 SDRAM. Offering PC/104 expansion, as well as an SD socket and an IDE interface, the SBC supports 1600 x 1200, 32-bit VGA resolution, says the company. A VGA port is also said to be provided.

The SBC is equipped with an Ethernet port, four internal USB 2.0 ports, and dual serial ports via a DB9 connector and an onboard pin header, says Acrosser. Other interfaces are said to include LPT, PS/2, and an increasing rarity -- a floppy-drive interface.

The 7.3 x 4.8-inch, half-size ISA board is capable of fanless operation, and is able to withstand temperatures ranging from 32 to 140 deg. F, says Acrosser. Supported operating systems include Linux, Windows XP, and DOS, says the company.
