The recent release by Microsoft of an RDP 6.0 (Remote Desktop Protocol) client for Windows Vista and Windows XP Pro has fueled a desire for equivalent support for Windows XP Embedded. Currently, the Windows XP Embedded development team is busy "componentizing" just such a client for XPe runtimes.

The forthcoming RDP 6.0 component for XPe runtimes will only support systems based on Windows XP Embedded Service Pack 2 Feature Preview 2008, however, according to a post on the Windows XPe team blog. "It does not address the need of customers who are still using Windows XP Embedded Service Pack 2 (or XPe SP2)," the post notes.

In order to support developers working with XPe SP2, the blog post provides "some guidance to customers [regarding] how they may install RDP 6.0 on their XPe SP2 runtime images using the RDP 6.0 desktop distribution package for XP Pro."

Further details regarding the RDP 6.0 client for Windows is available on Microsoft's website, here.
