Advantech is offering Windows CE and XP Embedded reference implementations for its line of x86-based panel PCs. The company also offers OS customization services for the devices.

Advantech's Panel PCs are targeted at information appliances such as interactive kiosks and point of sale terminals.

Panel PCs integrate a CPU board, LCD display, and touchscreen in a compact chassis, forming a highly integrated, network-ready computer. Screen sizes range from 10 to 17 inches.

According to Advantech, the reference OS images include drivers for all hardware systems, and can speed prototyping and system development. They are available as follows:
        • Windows CE .NET 4.2

          Models supported in English -- PPC-105T, PPC-L126T, PPC-123T, PPC-153T

The PPC-105T and PPC-L126T also support Japanese versions.

          Three versions are available:
          • CE. NET 4.2 Core -- Baseline CE .NET operating system components including the kernel, filesystem, networking and communications stacks, and multimedia functions, plus the application development platform.
          • CE. NET 4.2 Professional -- Adds Windows Messenger, WordPad, the Remote Desktop Protocol, and Internet Explorer 6 to the baseline.
          • CE. NET 4.2 Professional Plus -- Adds CE .NET viewers for images, PDFs, and Office-compatible documents including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to the Professional version.

The CE .NET images require a Compact Flash (CF) module of at least 32 MB.

        • Windows XP Embedded with Service Pack 1

          Models supported in English -- PPC-103T, PPC-105T, PPC-L126T, PPC-123T, PPC-153T, PPC-S123, PPC-S153, PPC-174T

The PPC-L126T, PPC-S123T and PPC-S153T also support Japanese versions.

The XP image is around 850 MB and is intended to be stored on a hard disk drive.
Advantech's customization services include removing unused OS components, internationalization, and configuration of application-specific drivers.
