Atom-based LAN appliance has optional 10/100 switch

Aewin announced an Intel Atom-based network appliance that comes with either six gigabit Ethernet ports or five gigabit ports and four switched 10/100 ports. The SCB-7971 includes a N450, D410, or D510 CPU, up to 2GB of RAM, and hard disk or CompactFlash storage, the company says.

According to Aewin, its new SCB-7971 is capable of providing high throughput for a broad range of SMB and enterprise network applications, including security, UTM (unified threat management), network management, load balancing, WAN-optimized acceleration, and VOIP gateways. The device may be configured with any of three "Pineview" Atom CPUs, including the single-core D410 (10 Watt TDP) and N450 (5.5 Watt TDP) or the dual-core D510 (13 Watt TDP), the company says.

In every case, the CPUs are teamed with Intel's ICH8M I/O controller, and provided with up to 8GB of RAM via a single SODIMM slot, according to Aewin. Meanwhile, an operating system may be installed on the SCB-7971 via either a CompactFlash Type II slot or a 3.5-inch bay, the latter compatible with SATA hard disk drives, says the company.

The SBC-7971 is available either with six gigabit Ethernet ports (pictured above left) or with five gigabit ports and a four-port 10/100 switch (above right). Aewin says the latter version is available only with the N450 CPU, presumably because of thermal constraints.

Both versions are said to include a 16 x 2 liquid crystal display for status messages, a RJ45 serial console port (there's no VGA output), and two USB 2.0 ports. Internally, the devices include a Mini PCI expansion slot, 60 Watt power supplies, a second serial port, and two more USB ports, according to Aewin.

Features and specifications listed by Aewin for the SBC-7971 include:

        • Processor -- Intel Atom N450, D410, or D510 clocked at 1.66GHz (N450 only when 10/100 switch is specified)
        • Chipset -- ICH8M
        • Memory -- Up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM
        • Storage -- 3.5-inch bay for SATA hard disk drive and CompactFlash Type I/II slot
        • Expansion -- Mini PCI slot
        • Networking:
          • 6 x gigabit Ethernet (2 ports feature bypass between LAN1 and LAN2)
          • or, 5 x gigabit Ethernet and 4 x switched 10/100
        • Other I/O:
          • 1 x RJ45 console port (COM1)
          • 1 x RS232 (COM2; internal pin header)
          • 4 x USB 2.0 (2 internal, 2 external)
        • Operating temperature -- 32~104 deg. F (0~40 deg. C)
        • Power -- 12VDC via 60W AC power supply
        • Dimensions -- 17 x 8 x 1.7 inches (432 x 270 x 44mm)
        • Weight -- 9.92 pounds (4.5kg)
        Further information

Aewin did not cite pricing or operating system support for the SCB-7871, but the device appears to be available now and should support most x86 OSes. More information may be found on the company's website, here.
