Software consultant Alexander Wechsler has written an FAQ that addresses questions raised by developers subsequent to his presentation on HORM (Hibernate Once, Resume Many) at the Mobile and Embedded Developers' Conference (MEDC) earlier this month.

HORM is a feature of Windows XP Embedded SP2 that works together with the Enhanced Write Filter (EWF) to protect against unwanted write access and provide quicker boot times, according to Microsoft. HORM and EWF have apparently been puzzling developers ever since SP2 was released in late 2004. Last year, the XP Embedded team wrote an in-depth article for MSDN to try to clear up some of the confusion.

Wechsler has also developed and made freely available "Horm Manager Lite" (HML), a GUI tool for accessing the EWF and HORM APIs. In particular, HML properly manages the case of a system that has both unprotected and EWF protected partitions, a confusing and potentially disastrous situation, according to Wechsler.
