American Industrial Systems (AIS) announced an access control system that runs a Windows Embedded operating system on Intel's Atom N270 processor. The Access Management System (AMS) includes a 7-inch touchscreen, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, two digital I/Os, and an infrared system sensor that wakes the system from standby when a user approaches, the company says.

The AMS, available with or without bundled access management software, is designed to be wall-mounted beside any door to which access is to be restricted. Able to interface with a digital lock via its two I/Os, the device is also useful for conference room booking, library management, and student achievement checking, AIS says.

According to AIS, the AMS accepts 1GB or 2GB of RAM and stores its Windows operating system -- whether this is Windows XP Embedded, Windows Embedded Standard, or Windows CE was not stated -- on a CompactFlash card. The device employs the popular Intel Atom N270 CPU, along with the usual 945GSE northbridge and ICH7M southbridge, the company adds.

        OUR VERDICT:
Who'd have thought the Atom would wind up even in door locks?
In addition to the digital I/Os already mentioned, the AMS has two gigabit Ethernet ports, a USB 2.0 port, plus an available Mifare smart card reader. Users can interact with the device simply by holding their smart cards up to it, or by entering information on its seven-inch touchscreen display, which has a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, says AIS.

Should it become necessary to contact a remote administrator, the AMS enables audio or video conferencing via a 1.3-megapixel webcam and a digital microphone, according to AIS. A 256-level watchdog timer is capable of rebooting the system if abnormal conditions are detected, the company adds.

Features and specifications listed by American Industrial Systems for the AMS include:

        • Processor -- Intel Atom N270 clocked at 1.6GHz
        • Memory -- 1GB or 2GB of DDR2 RAM via single SODIMM slot
