Rugged tablet runs Windows XP Embedded

American Industrial Systems (AIS) announced a 10.4-inch tablet PC employing Intel Atom CPUs and a sunlight-readable transflective touchscreen display. The SRT101AZ resists three-foot drops, operates up to six hours on a battery charge, uses hard disk or CompactFlash storage, and runs Windows XP Embedded, the company says.

According to AIS, its new SRT101AZ runs either Windows XP Embedded or "Windows XP Embedded Professional." The second of these two operating systems is not an actual Microsoft product, as far as we're aware: What we think the company is trying to say is that purchasers of the tablet may order Windows XP Embedded if they have a specific dedicated application in mind; for general-purpose desktop use, on the other hand, Windows XP Professional can be purchased.

In any case, the SRT101AZ is said to have room for a 1.8-inch hard disk drive, and also a CompactFlash slot that accepts up to 8GB of storage. Thus, purchasers can install a full desktop OS, or rely on solid-state storage with an embedded OS if extra shock resistance is required.

AIS says the vibration-resistant SRT101AZ survives multiple three-foot drops, meets IP45 standards for sealing against liquids and dust, and may be operated in temperatures from 0 to 40 deg. C (32 to 104 deg. F). The tablet sports a 10.4-inch display with 1024 x 768 resolution and resistive touchscreen technology, available in a transflective version that is sunlight-readable, the company adds.

According to AIS, the SRT101AZ is available with Intel's 1.1GHz Atom Z510 or 1.6GHz Atom Z530, both with the SCH US15W northbridge/southbridge, and supports up to 1GB of DDR2 memory. We've already mentioned the hard disk drive and CompactFlash options, but the tablet is also said to be expandable via PCMCIA Type II and SD slots, AIS adds.

The SRT101AZ comes with 802.11b/g/n wireless networking, Bluetooth 2.0, and optional GPRS/HSDPA cellular network (with SIM card slot), AIS says. Wired connectivity, meanwhile, includes a docking port, a VGA port, two USB 2.0 host ports, a RS232 port, plus a microphone input and headphone output, the company adds.

Obviously meant to be operable primarily via its touchscreen, the SRT101AZ also is said to include a button for invoking its software keyboard, an enter button, a button for switching the display between landscape and portrait modes, three function keys, and buttons that trigger operation of an optional camera or barcode scanner. In addition to the latter items, other options include a magnetic stripe reader (MSR) and a credit card reader, says AIS.

According to AIS, the SRT101AZ comes with a relatively small 1900mAh battery, but is also available with an external 3800mAh battery that is hot-swappable and provides up to six hours of operation. Rubber bumpers are standard equipment, but rubber grips and a stand are also available, the company adds.

Specifications listed for the SRT101AZ include the following, according to AIS:

  • Processor -- Intel Atom Z510 clocked at 1.1GHz, or Atom Z530 clocked at 1.6GHz
  • Chipset -- SCH US15W
  • Memory -- Up to 1GB of DDR2 RAM via single SODIMM slot
