        Anti-malware defends Windows XP Embedded

McAfee has announced that its "anti-malware" software is now available in a version specifically tailored for Windows XP Embedded. McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i is said to be targeted at typical embedded applications such as point-of-sale terminals, airline kiosks, and ATMs.

The company says VirusScan Enterprise combines anti-virus, firewall, and intrusion prevention technology. It can defend systems against viruses, buffer overflows, and blended attacks.

        McAfee adds that the product:
        • Locks down shares, files, and directories
        • Blocks the execution of a specific file
        • Generates log entries or alerts when attempts are made to access blocked items
McAfee notes that VirusScan Enterprise integrates with the company's system security management console, McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO). The company says ePO offers centralized deployment, policy configuration, and enforcement claimed to enable companies to "centrally manage the security of thousands or even tens of thousands of distributed Windows XP Embedded endpoints."

According to Brian Burke, analyst for security products and services at IDC, "Many companies underestimate the security risks associated with embedded operating systems. Businesses must take a serious look at all of their endpoints, and think of them as potential entry points for malicious code."

VirusScan Enterprise requires approximately 32 MB of RAM. The product is available now, and the company says interested customers should contact it for information on the "Windows XP Embedded Conditional Support Program."
