Anti-malware protects Windows XP Embedded systems

SecureWave is offering a version of its malware security software that supports Windows XP Embedded. Sanctuary for Windows XP Embedded aims the company's anti-malware protection at ATMs, industrial robotics, thin clients, set-top boxes, and network area storage devices, the company says.

Unlike many other virus protection packages, Sanctuary doesn't rely on tracking signatures of known threats. Instead, it allows administrators to explicitly define what applications and portable storage devices are allowed to run on corporate endpoints, denying by default all unwanted executables and unauthorized devices. This offers protection from all future malware threats as well as present ones, the company explains.

Sanctuary also provides "complete control" over portable devices such as removable USB storage devices and Bluetooth keyboards that can interact with embedded endpoints. It precludes the use of all devices that haven't been authorized and also allows complete FireWire and USB port lockdown for maximum security, avoiding any data leakage or malware intrusion, SecureWave claims.

"Yesterday's definition of an endpoint was a desktop or laptop PC, but today an endpoint can also be a thin client device or a smart phone," said Dennis Szerszen, vice president of marketing and corporate development at SecureWave. "Whatever tomorrow brings, Sanctuary will be there to enable enterprises to securely embrace these new technologies."

Thirty-day evaluations of the software are available on request, the company says.
