Antivirus software protects Windows CE and Pocket PC

Windows CE and its derivatives (Pocket PC, Smartphone, ...) tend to be immune to viruses that target desktop PCs, but that situation is unlikely to persist as Windows powered handheld computers proliferate. Accordingly, the purveyors of virus protection software have begun releasing virus protection software aimed at handheld devices.

The latest is from Network Associates, which claims to be "the leading provider of intrusion prevention solutions."

According to Network Associates, next-generation PDAs, with their ability to download information from Web sites, email, or even wirelessly via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or infrared ports, have become an added point of attack for threats to enter the system. PDAs can be infected by viruses written specifically for them, causing damage to the data and the deletion of files.

Network Associates says its new McAfee VirusScan PDA Enterprise software offers comprehensive anti-virus protection for Microsoft Pocket PC and Windows Mobile based devices. The software is described as follows:
McAfee VirusScan PDA Enterprise offers on-device virus protection that allows management via McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO), which helps to ensure up-to-date protection and minimize user intervention. With the detailed reporting features of McAfee ePO, IT administrators can easily manage major aspects of their security and quickly survey their wireless devices protection in conjunction with the security of their desktops, laptops and servers.

McAfee VirusScan PDA Enterprise offers advanced on-device virus protection with regular scheduled updates of the latest virus definition files. These updates can be downloaded directly from the device's Internet connection, via a direct wireless connection or during synchronization when the device is connected to a PC with an Internet connection. Once the software has been installed using the PC, all further updates and scanning take place directly on the PDA. McAfee VirusScan PDA Enterprise also has a small footprint that enables comprehensive protection from threats, without sacrificing space or power.

McAfee VirusScan PDA Enterprise is managed by McAfee ePO, providing enterprise software deployment, policy management and graphical reporting from one console. McAfee ePO provides IT administrators with the visibility they need to evaluate their policy's effectiveness, evaluate their network's weak points and to customize reports to fit their specific needs.
