U.K. distributor Datasound Laboratories announced a fanless box PC with a waterproof enclosure. The ACS-2701 uses a 1GHz Celeron M processor, has room for a 2.5-inch hard disk drive, and offers covered ports that maintain the system's IP65 rating, the company says.

The ACS-2701 is a product of Taiwan-based Aplex Technology, which lists the same features and specifications for the device as does Datasound. Designed for embedded control applications, the ACS-2701 has a waterproof (IP65-rated) enclosure, plus covers (below) that keep liquids out of its power input and four ports when they're not in use, according to the companies.

According to Aplex, the ACS-2701 runs fanlessly over an operating range of -4 to 140 deg. F (-20 to 60 deg. C), resists 1G shocks of 11ms duration, and accepts DC inputs from 11 to 28 Volts (12 V desired). Maximum power consumption, via an IP67-rated AC adapter, is just 18 Watts, the company adds.

Aplex says the ACS-2701 uses a 1GHz Celeron M ULV processor, with no second-level cache. The chipset is Intel's 910GMLE northbridge and ICH6M southbridge, and up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM may be installed in the system's single SODIMM socket, the company adds.

While it does not have a CompactFlash or SD slot, the ACS-2701 has an internal bay for a SATA-interfaced, 2.5-inch storage device, which could be a SSD (solid state disk) at the purchaser's discretion. The device has one Ethernet port (10/100, we presume), one USB port, one serial port, and a VGA output, Aplex says.

Specifications listed for the ACS-2701 by Datasound Laboratories and Aplex include:

        • Processor -- Intel Celeron M ULV clocked at 1GHz
        • Chipset -- 910GMLE northbridge and ICH6M southbridge
        • Memory -- Up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM via single SODIMM slot
        • Storage -- 2.5-inch bay for SATA device
        • Networking -- 1 x Ethernet (n/s, but 10/100 presumed)
        • Other I/O:
          • 1 x USB
          • 1 x VGA
          • 1 x serial
        • Power -- 11 to 28VDC; 12VDC, 60W AC adapter
        • Operating range -- -4 to 140 deg. F (-20 to 60 deg. C)
        • Dimensions, including mounting bracket -- 10.2 x 5.78 x 2.63 inches (259 x 147 x 67mm)
        • Weight -- 4.62 pounds (2.1kg)
        Further information

Neither Datasound nor Aplex cited pricing for the ACS-2701, but the device appears to be available now, and is said to run either Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Embedded. More information may be found on the Datasound website, here, or Aplex website, here.
