LogMeIn's core technology,
available for Windows Mobile devices as well as Windows desktops, is a proprietary remote desktop protocol that allows screens and keystrokes to be transmitted over the Internet to a web browser, with SSL (secure sockets layer) encryption. Unlike solutions such as Microsoft's own
RDP (remote desktop protocol) or VNC, however, LogMeIn does not require knowledge of remote systems' IP addresses, port forwarding, or other reconfiguration of firewalls, according to the company. This is because LogMeIn servers keep track of client devices dynamically, and are said to handle the job of setting up connections when required.

LogMeIn connecting to a Windows XP system remotely
(Click to enlarge)LogMeIn has been available for several years in a variety of editions, including the LogMeIn Free edition pictured above connecting to a Windows XP System remotely. In the past, however, the application couldn't operate on Windows XP Embedded devices, except those administrators may have configured to allow download and installation of arbitrary executables.
Now, with LogMeIn Embedded, "Windows Embedded device manufacturers, software vendors and managed service providers" can add the software to devices at build time. When a device is deployed and brought online, the software will be licensed automatically, LogMeIn adds.
LogMeIn Embedded can be configured to run invisibly, without placing icons on a device's system tray or displaying other messages, the company says. Therefore, it's claimed, the software may be used to check on and remotely administer even highly visible systems, such as those responsible for digital signage.
According to the company, LogMeIn Embedded has all the functionality of the existing LogMeIn Reach edition, including the following:
- Remote control of computers wherever they are located, including behind firewalls
- Management features including a registry editor, event viewer, user manager, and remote rebooting
- Flexible administrator accounts, secondary user accounts, and the ability to group computers by various criteria
- File transfer capabilities, and the ability to map local drives to the remote PC
- Local printing of remote files
- Inventory management and reporting, providing detailed information about installed hardware and software
- Performance monitoring, listing CPU and memory load, disk space, registry keys and DLLs in use, open TCP/IP ports, installed applications, and open files
Andrew Burton, VP of products for LogMeIn, says, "As new breeds of smarter, Windows-based devices are connecting to the Internet in disparate and remote locations, embedded device manufacturers and service providers are looking for a better way to access, manage, and support these remote systems."
