Eltima Software has updated its software for synchronizing Windows Mobile devices with Macintosh OS X desktops. SyncMate version 2.0 synchronizes email, tasks, contacts and other information on a Mac with a mobile device, supports Google Calendar and Contacts, and provides free online backup, the company says.

SyncMate, first released in November 2007, takes Windows Mobile content stored on a device in its Favorites, Contacts, Calendar, and Notes applications, then synchronizes it in both directions with the Macintosh desktop equivalents -- Bookmarks, Address Book, iCal, and Stickies. As such, it compares to a longer-lived competitor, Mark/Space's Missing Sync for Windows Mobile (recently offered in a special version for HTC phones).

SyncMate is additionally claimed to synchronize email, linking Apple's Mail or Microsoft's Entourage on the OS X desktop to Outlook on a Windows Mobile device. Version 2.0 of the application is now said to allow synchronizing devices with Google's Calendar and Contacts applications, and to offer free online storage with a usage period of "1000 years." The software is now also touted as a means of synchronizing information from on Mac to another.

Other features included in SyncMate 2.0 include the following, according to Eltima:
        • Synchronization via WiFi
        • The ability to give a mobile device Internet connectivity via a USB connection
        • The ability to check incoming, outgoing, and missed calls via a "Calls history" plugin
        • A "mount disk" feature that allows accessing the mobile device as a disk drive
As in past versions, Eltima offers both a free version of SyncMate and a paid version, SyncMate Expert, that costs approximately $40. The free version includes basic synchronization capability, including the new Google compatibility, but not SyncMate Expert's synchronization of browser bookmarks, mail, iPhoto, or iTunes. In addition, SyncMate Expert purchasers get 200MB of online backup storage, whereas users of the free version only get 50MB, the company says.

With regard to iPhoto, SyncMate Expert can move images to and from selected folders on each device, and, in the case of a Mac-to-mobile transfer, can automatically resize photos so they fit onto a device's screen. For iTunes, music can be sent from specific Macintosh folders or playlists to a mobile device, or can travel from the mobile back to the Mac. iTunes and SyncMate Expert also work with video, which can optionally be compressed into MPEG4 format as it is sent from the Mac to the mobile.

The SyncMate Expert edition also offers an SMS manager plugin that allows sending, managing, and deleting SMS messages using the Macintosh desktop computer's keyboard. In addition, it can synchronize bookmarks between Internet Explorer running on a mobile device, and Firefox or Safari running on the Macintosh desktop.
