Ateksoft has released a new version of its photo and video software for Windows Mobile phones made by HTC. CoolCamera v1.12.5 even allows a smartphone to be utilized as a webcam with applications such as Skype, MSN Messenger, and Yahoo Messenger, over WiFi or Bluetooth, according to the company.

According to Ateksoft, CoolCamera provides easy camera control by means of the phone's hardware buttons, and that adjustments can be made without leaving view finder mode. The software uses an efficient encoding algorithm optimized for the XScale processor to achieve video frame rates up to 25 fps, the company adds. At reduced frame rates, resolutions up to 1280 x 960 can be supported.

The webcam feature appears to work in conjunction with a desktop PC using ActiveSync through a cable, or wirelessly via WiFi or Bluetooth. An application such as Skype or Yahoo Messenger runs on the PC, and CoolCamera supplies streaming video from the smartphone.

CoolCamera works with a range of HTC platforms including the Magician, Alpine, Apache, Prophet, Wizard, Universal, and Tornado, according to Ateksoft. A free version with limits on recording time is downloadable here. The full-capability registered version goes for $14.90.
