An inexpensive software application from 4Pockets.com lets Windows Mobile Pocket PCs communicate over WiFi in a peer-to-peer manner, like walkie-talkies. 4Talk comes in both PC and Pocket PC versions and works over any local area network, wired or wireless, according to the company.

Unlike other push-to-talk (PTT) services that operate over cellular networks, 4Talk appears to be specifically intended for "short range transmissions" over a LAN/WLAN connection. 4Pockets says the software supports 16 independent channels plus an "emergency" channel. Users can see who's online and what channel they're on. In addition to PTT, a full-duplex mode supports headset operation, according to the company.

4Talk works on ARM and XScale processors running Windows Mobile 5.0 and 2003, 4Pockets says. The package is available from the company's website for under $8. To ensure compatibility, 4Pockets encourages users to download and try the demo before purchasing.
