Microsoft's MSDN developer website has published a transcript of the Windows XP Embedded (XPe) online "chat" held on Apr. 24. In the chat, six different Microsoft engineers and program managers were available to answer developers' miscellaneous questions relating to XPe.

No specific topic had been scheduled for the one-hour chat, so it is no surprise that the questions this time around were wide-ranging, varying from specific technical issues such as using the Enhanced Write Filter (EWF), to general questions such as the roadmap for XPe. The 29 questions were as follows:
        • What is the difference between XP Professional and XPe?

        • Is XPe restricted or limited in functionality compared to XP Professional? I personally couldn't get the device manager to work properly ...

        • What does XPe cost?

        • How can I format my CompactFlash for use with XPe?

        • What tools can I use to lock down the XPe interface?

        • When I run into an error during an application install, are there tools or resources that you recommend for figuring out the problem?

        • Given the release of XP SP3, what is the road map for XPe?

        • Will there be a Vista Embedded? If so, when?

        • UFDprep.exe does not run from a Vista development machine -- is this supported?

        • How can I delete files on a system with the File Based Write Filter (FBWF) enabled, and no keyboard?

        • In what Microsoft support phase is XPe SP2 -- "mainstream," or "extended"?

        • How can I connect to my device through RDC (remote desktop connection) after resealing the image?

        • How do I remove everything from the start menu except for the programs that I want to appear, restrict use of CMD, and lock down IE so that it will only go to sites in my domain?

        • Does XPe support updating devices via Windows Update?

        • We make customized tablet PCs currently running Win XP Professional with customized apps. Would there be any practical benefits from switching to XPe, such as longer battery life or reduced boot up time?

        • Why does it take so long to boot from my USB flash disk?

        • Why doesn't the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon appear in the system tray when a USB flash disk is inserted?

        • I used Ghost to make an image of my XPe runtime that has EWF enabled. After I deployed the ghosted image, the EWF volume was not found -- what is the problem?

        • What happens if EWF RAM gets full?

        • Can you protect your system from unexpected shutdowns with XPe?

        • Can I add a component to my runtime image once it has already been deployed?

        • When I delete a device in Device Manager it reappears on reboot. How can I disable/delete a device on XPe?

        • How can I add a file to my .NET assembly on XPe?

        • Is it possible to create a CDROM that will boot using a System Deployment Image (SDI)?

        • Is there is a Microsoft Certification for XP Embedded?

        • Can XPe be localized for different languages?

        • Not all strings are localized in my MUI (multilingual user interface) runtime -- is this expected?

        • Subnotebooks like Eee PCs are coming on strong these days. Will there be an XPe for home users?

        • I would like to use the Hibernate Once Resume Many HORM option with the EWF, but is there any way to have one disk not EWF protected?
