Microsoft has published several new "how-to" articles covering various aspects of Windows CE, with a primary emphasis on Windows CE 5.0. The articles are about platform development, device driver development and testing, and application development. Each article includes a set of hands-on exercises that require about an hour to complete.

The new how-tos, available for free download from Microsoft's MSDN developer website, are described as follows:
        • How to Create, Customize, and Debug an Image for the Windows CE 5.0 Emulator -- Provides step-by-step instructions to create, customize, build, download, and debug a Windows CE image to the Windows CE 5.0 Emulator. (37 printed pages)

        • How to Create a .NET Compact Framework Application by Using Visual Studio .NET 2003 -- Provides step-by-step instructions for working with Visual Studio .NET 2003 to build and debug a .NET Compact Framework application in C#. The article develops a C# forms-based application that will be deployed to a Windows CEbased emulator. (18 printed pages)

        • How to Develop and Test Device Drivers in Windows CE 5.0 -- Offers an introduction to developing and testing a Windows CE 5.0 device driver. It provides step-by-step instructions for creating a stream driver, creating a custom Windows CE Test Kit (CETK) test, and writing an application to test the driver. (25 printed pages)

        • How to Use eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0 to Create an Application for the Windows CE 4.1 Emulator -- Provides step-by-step instructions for becoming familiar with the eMbedded Visual C++ programming environment and for creating and downloading an application to the Windows CE 4.1 emulator. (34 printed pages)

        • How to Use Remote Tools to Track Memory Leaks in Windows CE Applications -- Provides a hands-on overview of the debug tools that can be used to track leaks in a Windows CE based-application or driver. It shows how to create, customize, build, download, debug, and use remote tools against a Windows CE 5.0 operating system image running on the Windows CE Emulator.
