22-inch touchscreen PCs offer choice of CPUs

Avalue has announced a pair of panel PCs sporting 22-inch displays and resistive touchscreens. The PPC-22W01 and PPC-22W03 include 2.5-inch hard disk drives, CompactFlash and Mini PCI slots, and dual gigabit Ethernet ports, the company says.

Featuring 22-inch displays with 1680 x 1050 pixel resolution, Avalue's PPC-22W01 and PPC-22W03 are among the largest touchscreen devices we've featured on WindowsForDevices.com. They feature resistive technology, a 700:1 contrast ratio, a 300-nit brightness rating, and five programmable function keys, according to the company.

Avalue didn't cite a target market, but its panel PCs are apparently aimed at embedded application instead of at the power user. The PPC-22W01 features a 1GHz Via Eden ULV processor and CX700M northbridge/southbridge. Meanwhile, the PC-22W03 uses Intel's 1.6GHz Atom N270, plus the 82945GSE northbridge and ICH7M southbridge.

According to Avalue, the PC-22W01 accepts a maximum 1GB of DDR2 RAM, and the PC-22W03 accepts 2GB. Apart from that and the different processors already mentioned, the two devices are apparently identical. Storage on both is provided by a 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive, or by an IDE-interfaced Type I/II CompactFlash socket, the company says.

The PC-22W01 and PC-22W03 also have internal Mini PCI expansion slots, which could be presumably used to install wireless networking modules. Avalue, however, lists an 802.11b/g USB WLAN adapter as an option for both systems.

According to the company, the PC-22W01 and PC-22W03 have two USB ports apiece, dual gigabit Ethernet ports, VGA connectors for external displays, and RS232 serial ports. Each of the devices also has stereo speakers, with two Watts of amplification per channel, and is said to support 5:1 surround sound. (What type of audio jacks are fitted wasn't specified, however.)

Avalue says both panel PCs also include watchdog timers, system temperature monitors, and automatic voltage throttling. The PC-22W01 and PC-22W03 operate on 12VDC power supplied by external AC adapters.

Features and specifications listed by Avalue for the PC-22W01 and PC-22W03 include the following:

        Further information

Avalue did not cite operating system support for the PC-22W01 or PC-22W03, but with their standard chipsets, the panel PCs should be compatible with most Windows versions as well as Linux. However, purchasers should verify that touchscreen drivers are available for their chosen operating system.

Pricing and availability also were not released, but the PC-22W01 and PC-22W03 appear to be available now. More information may be found on the Avalue website here and here.
