Touchscreen PC can be mounted outdoors

Axiomtek has introduced a 15-inch panel PC designed to be mounted outdoors, in factories, in kitchens, or on board ships. Offered with resistive or capacitive touchscreens, the GOT-815 includes a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, up to 2GB of RAM, three serial ports, gigabit Ethernet, and a PCI Express Mini Card slot, the company says.

Axiomtek's new GOT-815 (right) is very similar to a 12.1-inch device, the GOT-812, introduced by the company almost a year ago. In addition to a larger screen size, however, the 15-inch GOT-815 is now said to be offered in both resistive and capacitive versions.

According to Axiomtek, the GOT-815 has the same 800-nit brightness rating as the GOT-812, but resolution on the larger screen moves from 800 x 600 pixels to 1024 x 768. Apart from this, the primary technical difference appears to be that the GOT-815 adds both an additional RS232 port and a VGA output.

The GOT-815 again employs Intel's ultra-familiar, 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, with the usual 945GSE northbridge and ICH7M southbridge. A single SODIMM slot is said to accept up to 2GB of DDR2 memory, while operating system and data storage is provided either by a CompactFlash slot or by a 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive. When CompactFlash storage is employed, the panel PC withstands vibration of up to 3G while it is operating, says Axiomtek.

According to Axiomtek, the device's stainless steel housing is IP66-rated for resistance to water, powder, and salt mist, as are the unit's eight rear-panel ports. As a result, the device may be installed in outdoor environments, in kitchens or food factories, or on board ships, the company claims.

The system is said to have a readily accessible brightness adjuster, plus a switch to turn its backlighting on and off. When the device is attached to a VESA-compatible bracket, an optional keyboard (below right) can hang from the bottom, Axiomtek notes.

Rear-panel ports (above left), sheltered behind protective gaskets, include a DC power input, three RS232 ports, a VGA output, a gigabit Ethernet port, and two USB 2.0 ports, says Axiomtek. Optional equipment is said to include an 802.11a/b/g/n wireless adapter, which presumably fits into the GOT-812's cited PCI Express Mini Card slot.

According to Axiomtek, the GOT-815 is compatible with Windows XP Embedded, Windows XP, Windows CE, and Linux.

Features and specifications listed by Axiomtek for the GOT-815 include:
