Backup utilities for Pocket PC and Smartphone

When was the last time you backed up your PDA? If you haven't given backup a thought, maybe you should think again. The very nature of portable devices -- being more exposed to theft and damage -- makes backing them up at least as important as backing up your main office or home computer.

There are a number of approaches to backup. You could simply copy the files manually to a removable memory device or over a network connection. There are also a number of utilities available that automate the process to varying degrees. Among these are:
        • ActiveSync -- If you have a Pocket PC or Smartphone, you probably have Microsoft's ActiveSync on your desktop PC for synchronizing calenders, contact lists, tasks, and so on. What many users don't realize is that ActiveSync also has both full and incremental backup capabilities.

        • Sprite Backup Premium -- This is both a backup utility and a resource monitor tracking things like battery status and storage space. Backups can be scheduled to occur at regular intervals such as daily or weekly.
A review of these and other backup utilities was posted today at MTekk, the Australian news site for mobile devices.
