[Updated 2:00pm PST] -- Microsoft chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates unveiled the next version of Windows Mobile during his keynote talk at Microsoft's third annual Mobile Developer Conference (DevCon) in San Francisco this morning. Gates said the new version of Microsoft's mobile device software platform, dubbed "Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition" (Windows Mobile 2003 SE), includes...

new screen orientations and resolutions, including landscape, square, and VGA (640x480 pixel) support for Pocket PCs, and QVGA (320x240 pixel) support for Smartphones.

According to a CNET story, Windows Mobile 2003 SE also comes with an updated version of Pocket Internet Explorer that "allow[s] Web pages to be read in a single column, eliminating the need for horizontal scrolling . . .", a feature that was previously only available via third-party browsers such as Access's NetFront.

Gates noted that a single application can now be written to run on both Pocket PCs and Smartphones independent of screen characteristics, which will automatically adapt to the geometry and resolution of the device's display.

Also today, Motorola disclosed that its innovative new dual-hinge MPx smartphone is based on Windows Mobile 2003 SE, and that it takes full advantage of the SE's new dynamic screen switching feature, which enables seamless transitions between landscape and portrait mode display. Gates demonstrated this capability of SE on an MPx during his DevCon keynote, by folding the MPx up from portrait mode, and then unfolding it into landscape mode.
