AuthenTec has announced what it claims is the first fingerprint authentication technology to be included with Microsoft's Windows CE 5.0. The company says its EntrePad family of fingerprint sensors will be supported by Platform Builder for Windows CE 5.0, allowing developers to easily add fingerprint biometric support to products such as PDAs, cell phones, automotive devices, and multi-user...

        computer terminals.

According to AuthenTec, the new version of Windows CE expands the local authentication sub system (LASS) and enables users to seamlessly support AuthenTec's TruePrint-based sensors. Fingerprint authentication can be configured for "power-on" and "log-in" to launch an application or to log-on to a website.

AuthenTec says its patented TruePrint technology allows fingerprints to be read below the surface of the skin to the live layer and therefore not affected by common skin surface conditions including dry, worn, calloused, dirty or oily skin that can affect other sensors' ability to acquire accurate fingerprint images for user authentication purposes. The company claims that TruePrint is the only fingerprint sensor technology capable of acquiring everyone's fingerprint under virtually any condition.
