Eurotech announced a fanless box computer that runs Windows XP Embedded using a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor. The Bx-400F-N270 includes dual gigabit Ethernet ports, a 2.5-inch hard disk drive and dual CompactFlash slots, plus both PCI and Mini PCI Express expansion slots, the company says.

Targeting industrial applications, the new Bx-400F-N270 appears to be on a similar engineering track to the Vx-120F-N270 and Vx-150F-N270 (right) touchscreen devices Eurotech also announced recently. These new panel PCs replace the Vx-120 and Vx-150, which had 600MHz Celeron predecessors, upgrading to the 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270, and the Bx-400F-N270 replaces a Celeron product too (known -- you guessed it -- as the Bx-400F).

While it wasn't specified, the new Bx-400F-N270 presumably also employs the usual 945GSE northbridge and ICH7M southbridge. According to Eurotech, the device is "designed to resist the mechanical and thermal stresses commonly experienced in industrial environments," and runs fanlessly.

Providing faster processing than the Bx-400F, the Bx-400F-N270 also offers dual gigabit Ethernet ports, an upgrade from the earlier computer's 10/100 ports. Other interfaces are the same as before, including four USB 2.0 ports, three RS232 Ports (the third serial port is optional), dual PS/2 ports for a keyboard and mouse, audio I/O, and a VGA output.

Eurotech says the Bx-400F-N270 accepts up to 2GB of RAM via a single SODIMM slot, and also includes a 80 GB, 2.5-inch hard disk drive. Like the Vx-120F-N270 and Vx-150F-N270 panel PCs, the device additionally has two CompactFlash slots, one externally accessible and one internal.

Finally, the Bx-400F-N270 has both PCI and Mini PCI Express expansion slots, according to Eurotech. The company says the device may be installed on a DIN rail using the two mounting brackets that are included, or may also be placed in angled positions with the aid of optional accessories.

Features and specifications listed by Eurotech for the Bx-400F-N270 include the following:
        • Processor -- 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270
        • Memory -- Up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM via single SODIMM socket
        • Storage -- 2.5-inch, 80GB hard disk drive or CompactFlash
        • Networking -- 2 x gigabit Ethernet ports with RJ45 connectors
        • Other I/O:
          • 4 x USB 2.0
          • 2 x RS232 (third is optional)
          • 2 x PS/2
          • 1 x VGA
          • Audio line out, line in, microphone
        • Expansion:
          • 1 x PCI
          • 1 x Mini PCIO Express
          • 2 x CompactFlash slots (one internal, one external)
        • Power supply -- 24VDC
        • Dimensions, not including mounting brackets -- 9.62 x 8.77 x 3.46 inches (244.6 x 223 x 88mm)
        • Weight -- 9.92 pounds (4.5kg)
        Further information

Eurotech did not release pricing for the Bx-400F-N270, but said the device will be available in September with either Windows XP or a preinstalled Windows XP Embedded image. More information may be found on the company's website, here.
