Browsing the Internet from a handheld device is tedious under the best of circumstances, but the lower resolution square screen of the Palm Treo 700w presents extra challenges. Treocentral.com, recently published a review of Windows Mobile-compatible browsers that work reasonably well on the 700w's 240x240 screen.

Reviewer Tim Hillebrand begins by outlining the three major approaches to handheld browsing, and gives examples of each:
        • Plug-ins for Pocket Internet Explorer -- NetFront, MultiIE, and PIEPlus

        • Stand-alone browser applications -- NetFront and Opera

        • Servers that optimize websites for small screens -- Skweezer, Mobile Virtual Browser, and ThunderHawk
Unfortunately, many of these, which are otherwise excellent programs, either don't work at all or function rather poorly on the 700w, according to Hillebrand.

Hillebrand's review covers MultiIE 4.0, Skweezer, and Mobile Virtual Browser. His recommendation: combine MultiIE with Skweezer Pro for "the best possible Web surfing experience on your 700w."
