        Bsquare discontinues "power handheld" device

Bsquare announced today that it is discontinuing manufacture of its Power Handheld reference design, and that it is restructuring the associated Power Handheld business unit that focused on marketing and supporting the device.

The enabling software and other technologies that were developed for use in the device will be integrated into Bsquare's other software and consulting services offerings and will be available for license to OEMs and smart device makers. Additionally, the company will continue to offer warranty support for previously sold Power Handhelds.

"There is clearly a market opportunity for converged devices, however, we sold a relatively small number of units and the ongoing investment didn't make sense at the expense of our core business," explained Bsquar CEO Brian Crowley. Crowley also noted that the Power Handheld had been a point of contention because it competed with some of Bsquare's OEM customers.

Technologies included in the Power Handheld, which will continue to be available for license to Bsquare customers, include a radio interface layer, user interface, power management, and information management software that can be integrated into devices based on Microsoft's Windows CE and Windows Mobile embedded operating systems, Bsquare said.
