Arcom announced the release of a Development Kit for Windows CE .NET 4.2 supporting its VIPER PC/104 single board computer (SBC) based on a 400Mhz Intel PXA255 XScale processor. According to the company, the development kit includes the VIPER SBC with a pre-installed operating system image, as well Microsoft's eMbedded Visual tools for...

        immediate system development.

The VIPER includes an extensive range of onboard peripherals including a flat panel display controller for TFT and STN displays, 10/100baseTx Ethernet, 5 serial ports, CompactFlash socket for hot swap memory and wireless cards, and I/O expansion using the PC/104 bus.

As supplied in the Development Kit, the VIPER is fitted with 64MB DRAM, 16 or 32MB of Flash. The kit also includes the VIPER ICE (Industrial Compact Enclosure) development box, the VIPER-UPS (uninterruptible power supply), serial and Ethernet cables, a quarter-VGA color display with touchscreen, and a comprehensive quickstart manual.

"Windows CE .NET is now one of the most popular embedded operating systems for integration into instrumentation displays, machine controllers and kiosk/gaming machine products," an Arcom spokesperson said. "The combination of rich communications and GUI features along with an aggressive license cost policy make it a compelling choice for equipment manufacturers."
