        CE-based mobile phone/PDA for visually impaired wins honors

        The MPO 5500, claimed to be the first fully integrated cell phone and personal organizer for the visually impaired, has won three major awards this year.



        In February Alva B.V. and Pemstar Inc., co-developers of the MPO 5500, received the Belgian SWIFT prize and an award for "Best Use of Mobile for Special Needs" from the GSM Association at their annual meeting in Cannes, France. Then at CeBit 2004 in Hannover, the device received an iF Design Award.

        The MPO 5500, powered by a Windows CE .NET embedded operating system, provides all the key features traditional mobile phone and PDA users have come to expect -- plus, a set of special features and functions specifically for blind and visually impaired users.
