(Click here for a larger image of the ETXexpress-MC)This latest COM Express module in Kontron's ETXexpress line includes several features that are intended to minimize power consumption and heat generation. For example, the processor's 800 MHz maximum FSB (front-side bus) speed can be dynamically reduced according to performance requirements. Additionally, the design allows the processor to go into a deep sleep state for enhanced power efficiency. According to Kontron, the chipset logic recognizes whether data is stored on the processor's internal cache memory or in DRAM, and can avoid waking up the processor to access on-chip cache memory and unnecessarily draw on battery power. ACPI (advanced configuration and power interface) software support is provided, as well, the company said.
The module integrates Intel's 965GM Express chipset, and it supports up to 4GB of SDRAM via two 533MHz or 667MHZ DDR2 SO-DIMM sockets. Specific video output features were not disclosed.
Other key features are said to include:
- 3 x Serial ATA channels
- 8 x USB 2.0 ports
- Gigabit Ethernet port
- 5 x PCI Express x1 lanes
COM Express is a PICMG standard for small single-board computers (SBCs) that integrate processor, DRAM, and flash functions into a component-like "computer-on-module" (COM). COMs reduce the engineering effort required to build embedded electronics by supplying those sub-systems where electrical tolerances are the most exacting as a simple super-component. But they also offer flexibility, providing two different module sizes and five different pin-out types.
Supported operating systems include Windows 2000, XP, XP Embedded, and CE, as well as Linux, the company said.
The Kontron ETXexpress-MC is planned for launch this summer. Pricing was not disclosed.
