Chip PC Technologies has announced a thin client that runs Windows Embedded Standard (WES) 2009. The EX-PC XPD4741 uses a 1.6Ghz Atom processor, has 1GB of RAM and 2GB of flash storage, and includes client software for Xcalibur Global management software, the company says.

Israel-based Chip PC Technologies is the company behind the Jack PC (right), a tiny thin client that's designed to fit inside standard in-wall LAN jack cutouts. The new EX-PC XPD4741 is considerably more conventional, but, at 6.14 x 4.80 x 1.4 inches (156 x 122 x 36mm), isn't exactly huge. The device may be mounted on a stand, as shown at the top of our story, or hung from the back of a VESA-compatible monitor, according to the company.

Like so many other devices, the XPD4741 uses Intel's 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, with the 945GSE northbridge and ICH7M southbridge. While considered low-performing in the world of desktop PCs, the Atom nonetheless qualifies this device as a relatively high-powered thin client. Chip PC has equipped the XPD4741 with 1GB of RAM, and 2GB of flash storage, on which WES 2009 has been preinstalled.

Other hardware features of the XPD4741 include, on the front, a power switch, a LAN LED, mic in and headphone out jacks, and two USB 2.0 ports. On the rear, there are an RJ45 port for Gigabit Ethernet, two further USB 2.0 ports, a DVI-I video output, a PS/2 keyboard connector, and an input for 24VDC power. Chip PC says that with an appropriate cable adapter, the XPD4741 can support either single or dual monitors with resolutions of up to 1920 x 1200 pixels.

According to Chip PC, the XPD4741 includes not only the standard features of WES 2009, but also a client designed to work with the company's own Xcalibur Global management software, which, among other things, allowing securing thin clients and mapping their locations in an enterprise both physically and logically. The device is also designed to work with Microsoft's WDS (Windows Deployment Services) and Symantec's Altiris Deployment Solution, says Chip PC.
