SyChip has released the first in a family of chip-scale modules that implement wireless VoIP (voice over IP) for devices running Microsoft's Windows Mobile software platform. The highly integrated, low-power VWLAN7100 wVoIP SyVoice module includes an 802.11g modem and offers up to eight hours talk time, according to the company.

SyChip describes SyVoice as a complete end-to-end voice over wireless LAN package that can be quickly integrated into mobile handsets to support emerging dual-mode cellular/WLAN devices. The module integrates a VoIP processor along with an 802.11g WLAN modem, among other components, and comes with Windows Mobile drivers and other software for incorporating VoIP and data functions into mobile phone and PDA designs.

According to SyChip, the SyVoice VoIP engine consumes less than 15 mA of power during a VoIP call. The total module including the WLAN consumes just 150 mA, allowing handheld device talk times of up to eight hours when using a standard 1200 mAh battery, the company adds.

Sychip supports the module with the following software functions, which assist with managing VoIP calls:
        • SIP 2.0 stack
        • VoCoders -- G.711, G.729AB, G.726, G.723.1
        • Call control -- origination/termination, forwarding, waiting, hold, transfer, 3-way
        • Jitter Buffer
        • Audio Control
        • IPSEC
        Pricing and Availability

The VWLAN7100 is available for general sampling and comes in a near Quad Flat No-Lead (QFN) package that enables direct attachment to a printed circuit board using standard surface mount technology, according to SyChip. Pricing for the modules will be below $19 each, in volumes of 100,000.
