Windows PDA has dual-field scanning engine

Code announced a Windows Mobile 6.5-based handheld computer that includes a 1D/2D barcode scanner, a QWERTY keypad, and a 3.5-inch touchscreen. The "Code Reader 4100" has an 806MHz processor, 802.11a/b/g wireless networking, and an optional GSM cellular modem, the company says.

Code says its patented dual-field optics provide both wide- and high-density barcode scanning in a single unit. The 4100's 1280 x 960 pixel grayscale scanner and blue targeting bar allow scanning codes from 1.6 to 12.2 inches, as further detailed in the table below.

The 4100 more closely resembles a traditional PDA than many scanning handhelds, and it weighs just 11.4 ounces, according to Code. A 3.5-inch, 320 x 240 pixel touchscreen is combined with a full QWERTY keypad and directional keys, and the case -- available in gray or medical white -- is IP65-rated for sealing against dust and liquids, the company says.

According to Code, the 4100 (right) survives multiple five-foot drops to concrete, and works in temperatures ranging from 32 to 122 deg. F. A 3300mAh battery provides up to eight hours of continuous operation, adds the company.

Code says the 4100 runs Windows Mobile 6.5 on an 806MHz processor, which the distinctive clock speed suggests is Marvell's PXA320. The device includes 802.11a/b/g wireless networking and Bluetooth 2.0, while the gray-cased version is optionally available with a GSM cellular modem, according to the company.

The 4100 comes with 256MB of RAM, 256MB of flash storage, and a microSD expansion slot, says Code. The device is also said to offer a USB port, an RS232 port, plus a microphone input and headphone output.
