A project management software vendor has devised a clever way to enable mobile worker collaboration without requiring any new software to be installed on mobile devices. CMiC's approach consists of an enhancement to its Collaboration Manager software that consists of accepting collaboration database updates in the form of specially-formatted emails.

The approach has eliminated the need for mobile workers to access a PC in an office or at a job site in order to participate in project communications, according to the company. Users simply send an email to a designated destination address from any email-capable device such as a Windows Mobile Pocket PC or Smartphone, and the information is automatically entered into the project management database.

Users can create a record, update a record, or add a document to the database by simply composing and sending an email, according to CMiC. The server-side software recognizes keywords and translates the email into the appropriate database object.

The method vastly reduces the learning curve required for users of the company's collaboration software to get up to speed from their mobile devices, according to the company.

"Letting people use devices and communications tools they are already familiar with and comfortable with makes real-time collaboration easily achievable," says CMiC president Gord Rawlins. "Businesses no longer have to make large capital investments in technology and services to obtain a truly collaborative business environment."
