Advansus has announced a compact, "barebones" PC based on one of its nano-ITX motherboards. The fanless NTC100-LX800 is appropriate as a thin client, for driving LCD wall displays, or for other applications where mobility is required, according to the company.

Though it dwarfs this year's diminutive pico-ITX designs, the NTC100-LX800 is still a compact PC, measuring 6.7 x 6 x 1.7 inches internally. The case could presumably accept most nano-ITX motherboards, with faceplate modifications, but in this instance houses Advansus' ALX800-LCN main board, pictured below.

        The Advansus ALX-800LCN motherboard

The ALX800-LCN has an AMD Geode LX800 processor, clocked at 500MHz, plus the Geode CS5536 companion chip that integrates northbridge and southbridge functionality. A single 200-pin SODIMM socket accepts up to 1GB of memory, Advansus says.

The ALX800-LCN nano-ITX board supports enhanced IDE (DMA33) hard drives, but this is not touted by Advansus for the TCO100-LX800 system, possibly because drives will not fit within the system's case. Storage is, however, catered for by a Type II/III CompactFlash slot, accessible from the bottom of the unit. Internal expansion is via a Mini-PCI slot, primarily intended for a wireless LAN card.

The other main board capabilities include four USB ports (two on the front panel, two on the rear), 10/100 Ethernet, a PS/2 connector for keyboard and mouse, and audio I/O. The rear panel additionally includes a VGA port, said to be good for resolutions of up to 1024 x 768 in CRT mode and 1600 x 1200 in TFT mode.

Features and specifications listed by Advansus for the NTC100-LX800 include:
        • Processor -- AMD Geode LX800 clocked at 500MHz
        • Memory -- 1 SODIMM socket accepts up to 1GB of RAM
        • Display -- VGA output supports resolution up to 1024 x 768 in CRT mode and 1600 x 1200 in TFT mode
        • Networking -- 10/100 Ethernet, and 802.11b/g optional via wireless LAN slot
        • Other I/O:
          • 4 x USB
          • 1 x VGA
          • Audio in and line out on 2.5-mm jacks
          • Antenna input for WLAN card
          • PS/2 keyboard/mouse port
        • Expansion:
          • 1 x Mini-PCI
          • 1 x CompactFlash Type II/III
        • Power supply -- 12VDC
        • Dimensions -- 6.7 x 6 x 1.7 inches
        • Weight -- 1.4 pounds
Advansus did not release pricing or availability information on the NTC100-LX800, though the system appears to be on sale now. Operating system support also was not specified, although with its standard PC architecture, the device should be able to support Windows XP Embedded, Windows XP, and Linux.
