First Data, a provider of electronic commerce and payment services, has introduced a small POS (point-of-sale) transaction processing terminal that runs Windows CE 4.2. The FD-100 supports either dial-up or IP (Internet protocol) communications, and can accommodate an add-on module for WiFi, according to the company.

The FD-100 includes an integrated thermal printer and a touch-screen display, and is "off-the-shelf multi-language capable," according to First Data. It has five USB ports to support future payment enhancements and peripheral devices such as PINpads, check readers, and wireless peripherals.

The device comes with 64 MB of buffer memory, two serial ports, and a built-in 56K modem. It weighs less than 2 lbs and has a footprint of approximately 9 x 5 inches, making it small enough to fit just about anywhere, the company says.

According to First Data, the FD-100 features "substantially greater memory and faster communications than most POS terminals" and is compatible with all current electronic payment options -- credit and debit cards, prepaid cards, and electronic checks.

Barry McCarthy, First Data's vice president of product and business development, stated, "The FD-100 is a unique, feature-rich point of sale terminal. With a consumer familiar interface in the Microsoft Windows CE operating system, a touch-screen display, and five USB ports, the FD-100 provides merchants unparalleled flexibility and ease of use."

The FD-100 is available for purchase or for lease, according to First Data, presumably only to its transaction processing customers. Pricing was not disclosed.
