Board-vendor Ampro Computers has ventured into the "panel PC" market with a compact, industrial-style device running Windows CE 5.0. The ReadyPanel 6.5, said to be the first in a series, combines a Pentium-compatible EPIC form-factor SBC (single-board computer) with a 6.5-inch touch-screen flat panel.

Ampro describes the ReadyPanel 6.5 as an "application-ready Windows CE 5.0 appliance for HMI [human-machine interface] environments." The unit is offered with processors ranging from a 400 MHz Celeron to the recently released Core Duo. It can be configured with memory sizes up to 1 GB DRAM, and CompactFlash options up to 2 GB, according to the company.

ReadyPanel provides PC-style connectors for easy access to USB, Ethernet (RJ45), dual serial ports (DB9), additional CRT video, PS/2 keyboard and mouse, and audio, according to Ampro. External access to the CompactFlash slot is through an EMI-protected cover. Additional I/O ports can be included for rapid customization, the company says.

Ampro CEO Joanne Mumola Williams stated, "Ampro's new ReadyPanel is a complete solution with LCD that operates stand-alone or integrates easily into larger systems. Ampro has already secured ReadyPanel design wins in markets where Ampro's strengths are valued, including medical, industrial, and office automation."

        Pricing and Availability

ReadyPanel 6.5 with a 400 MHz Celeron is available now with Windows CE 5.0 installed, 64 MB CompactFlash, and 128 MB DRAM, priced at under $1200 in "moderate volume," according to Ampro.
