Identec Solutions has introduced what it claims is the world's first CompactFlash card RFID reader/writer with a range up to 100 meters (300 feet). The i-CARD CF is supported by drivers for a range of operating systems, including Windows CE, and targets applications in "intelligent asset management," according to the company.

The i-CARD CF is compatible with the company's line of Intelligent Long Range (ILR) RFID transponders, the i-Q and i-B series. Tags in the i-Q series are available with memory up to 32 KB and an optional sensor for monitoring temperature, which is useful for managing perishable food or other temperature-sensitive inventories. Another option is an LED for visual recognition, suitable for so-called "pick-by-light" applications.

According to Identec, software on the i-CARD CF enables pre-processing of data and firmware updates via the CF interface. Additionally, the company offers software libraries for use in developing customized applications.

Identec says it expects to begin i-CARD CF production shipments during the fourth quarter of this year, according to Identec.
