CompactPCI board has built-in RAID
2009-07-14
Kontron announced a new CompactPCI SBC (single-board computer) that has four SATA ports, supporting RAID levels 0, 1, 5, and 10. The "CP307-RS" includes a 1.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor or a 1.66Ghz Core Duo, and sports two gigabit Ethernet ports, the company says.
(Click here for a larger view of Kontron's CP-307RS) The CP-307RS is described as a follow-on to Kontron's previously released CP307-E2 CompactPCI (CPCI) SBC and, like that product, is intended for use in industrial robots, vision systems, and mobile data capture systems, as well as other extreme-temperature aerospace, railway, and maritime applications. The 3U board, measuring 6.3 x 6.3 inches (160 x 160mm), features a soldered-on processor and 2GB of RAM that is also soldered, allowing the device to withstand challenging environmental conditions, the company says. Compared to the CP307-E2, the CP-307RS adds two additional SATA ports, for a total of four, said to support RAID 0 (striping), 1 (mirroring), 5 (striping with parity), and 10 (striping and mirroring) without an additional controller. Normally, SATA signals are available through the J1 and J2 CPCI expansion connectors at the rear of the board. However, Kontron sells a "rear transition module," the CP-R103-RS (below left) that snaps onto J1 and J2, as shown below right. ![]() ![]() Kontron's CP-R103-RS (left) snaps onto the CP-307RS (right) The CP-R103-RS extends the length of the overall SBC but adds four real-world SATA ports, two real-world USB ports, a gigabit Ethernet port, a VGA port, and (via pin headers) two COM ports. These interfaces are in addition to those already supplied on the front panel of the CP-307RS which, as shown in the picture at the top of our story, has a VGA port, two USB 2.0 ports, and two gigabit Ethernet ports on its edge. ![]() A block diagram of Kontron's CP-307RS (Click to enlarge) As noted, the CP-307RS is available either with a 1.5GHz Intel Core 2 L7400 processor, or a 1.66GHz Core Duo L2400. Using Intel's 945GM northbridge and ICH7-R southbridge, the device has a 667MHz frontside bus. Kontron notes that in addition to its 2GB of soldered-on memory, the SBC has a SODIMM socket that can accept a 2GB memory module. Features and specifications provided by Kontron for the CP-307RS include the following:
Pricing for the CP307-RS and CP-R103-RS was not released, but Kontron says the devices are available now. The CP307-RS runs Windows XP, Windows XP Embedded, Linux, and VXWorks, according to the company. More information may be found on the Kontron website, here and here. Related stories:
