        Configurable in-vehicle computer runs Windows CE

        Above-Net is set to unveil a new, "highly configurable" in-vehicle computer at next month's Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose, Calif. The TopAuto supports Windows CE 5.0 and is designed to fit into existing in-dash media compartments, according to the company.

        Above-Net describes TopAuto as an open platform based on an Intel PXA270 processor clocked at 600 MHz. It is configurable with a wide range of interfaces, including:
        • 10/100 Ethernet
        • 3 USB host ports
        • 5 RS232 serial ports
        • IrDA
        • AC97 audio -- line-in/out, speaker out, mic in
        • Display:
          • up to 1024 x 768
          • LCD TFT and RGB video outputs
          • NTSC and PAL TV outputs
          • 5-wire resistive touchscreen
          • LCD panel options from 6.4 to 10.4 inches
        • Storage -- CompactFlash, IDE
        • Expansion -- PCMCIA, SDIO
        • Wireless -- CDMA/GSM/GPRS, GPS, 802.11 WiFi, Bluetooth


        Typical TopAuto application

        Above-Net notes that the large number of interface options enables the TopAuto to work with a wide range of peripherals, such as bar code, magnetic stripe, and RFID readers; printers and scales; and engine and vehicle monitors.

        In addition to supporting Windows CE 5.0, the TopAuto is also capable of running embedded Linux, according to the company.
