Cowon announced a Windows CE-based PMP (portable media player) with a 4.8-inch touchscreen and a HDMI video output. The V5 HD provides an 800 x 480 display, 720p video playback, 8 GB of flash storage, a SD slot, and an optional T-DMB (terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting) TV tuner, the company says.

Cowon once used Linux for its PMPs, but turned to Windows CE with the Q5W, introduced in 2007, and the P5, introduced in 2008. These devices used the MIPS32-based Alchemy Au1250 processor, produced by RMI Corporation prior to its acquisition by NetLogic Microsystems earlier this year.

The new V5 HD may be Au1250-powered as well, but Cowon provides no information on the PMP's CPU, nor could we locate data on how much RAM it comes with. The device runs Windows CE 6.0 with a custom user interface, has 8GB of flash storage, and includes a SD slot (right) for storage expansion, the Korean manufacturer says.

Unlike the P5, the V5 does not appear to include web browsing, nor does it include any kind of wireless capabilities except for an optional T-DMB TV receiver. However, the device provides music playback in a wide variety of formats, and video at 30 frames per second in resolutions up to 1280 x 720 pixels, says Cowon. Battery life reportedly extends to 45 hours for audio only, or up to 10 hours for video.

The V5 is also said to display still pictures, offer games written using Adobe's Flash technology, and include word clock, calculator, dictionary, and voice recording applications. Users can also view and edit Microsoft Office documents via Cowon's included "OfficeGURU" software, the company says.

According to Cowon, the V5 includes a USB 2.0 port, headphone jack, plus HDMI and composite video outputs. Featuring a 4.8-inch touchscreen display with 800 x 480 resolution, the device measures 4.72 x 3.22 x 0.6 inches (120 x 82 x 15.7mm) and weighs 6.94 ounces (197g), adds the company.

        Further information

According to Cowon, the V5 will be available next month, for prices starting at 299,000 Korean Won (about $253). More information on the device may be found on the company's website, here.
