        Customizable industrial handheld runs Windows CE

        Psion Teklogix recently introduced a new version of its Windows CE based industrial handheld. The new Workabout Pro offers various barcode scanning options, as well as options for a color display, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless, and cellular communications, and targets data collection applications in harsh environments.

        The device is based on a 400 MHz Intel PXA255 processor and is available in two models. The Workabout Pro M features a monochrome display with 64MB of RAM and 64MB of Flash memory, while the Pro C has a color display with 128MB of RAM and 64MB of RAM, along with integrated Bluetooth wireless.

        Psion says the Workabout's expansion and customization capabilities enable it to meet the needs of the mobile computing, supply chain, and logistics and retail markets. Expansion is via a SD/MMC memory card slot, a Type II CompactFlash slot, a Type II PCMCIA slot (internally accessable only), and a 100-pin high speed expansion connector for custom peripherals. The company offers a hardware development kit for use in designing third party expansion modules.

        In a related development, the company announced that it will collaborate with Syscan International to provide custom RFID solutions for the Workabout Pro.
