Building and installing a car PC can be a fun and rewarding project for the auto/audio/computer enthusiast. The "lab guys" at Corsair, a manufacturer of high-performance memory modules for gaming and mission-critical servers, have written a detailed, well-illustrated guide to installing a Windows-based touchscreen car PC.

Corsair's car PC is based on a Via Epia SP8000 mini-ITX motherboard with an 800 MHz C3 processor and 1 GB of RAM. A 7-inch-wide touchscreen LCD provides input and output. The system also includes a 100 GB hard drive, a DVD-RW drive, and a GPS receiver. All the components are standard-off-the-shelf parts.

The car PC runs Windows XP, but with some additional effort could probably be configured to run Windows XP Embedded from a CompactFlash card. The touchscreen display is managed by an application called Centrafuse, from Fluxmedia. Centrafuse handles all audio and video functions, as well as the GPS.
